GOD TALKS WITH US

This skeletal outline supplies the basic structure for a study about “Hearing God’s Voice.” These notes contain a few of Dr. Cilluffo’s  illustrations. Use them or ignore them, but don’t miss the central issue of the study - We must hear the Lord speaking to us in order to experience a fulfilling relationship with Him.  We have to be on speaking terms with God.

THE PROMISES THAT GOD SPEAKS TO US

Heb. 1:1

Jn. 14:26 The indwelling Holy Spirit lives in this house of flesh – obviously anyone living in your house speaks with you!

Jn. 16:13-14

Jn. 8:47

I. “I WANT TO HEAR MORE”  Starring Kayla Cilluffo

What does it take to please God?  FAITH - the word of faith

Heb 11:6  But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

How can we get faith?  Faith comes by hearing God’s word.

II.HOW DOES FAITH OPERATE?

A.Hearing:

Rom 10:17  So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Hearing God speak depends on our spiritual alertness and the conditions of our hearts.  Scripture tells us that some people are dull of hearing, while others are quick to hear, believe and act upon His living word.  How is your hearing?

B.Believing:

We believe all sorts of things just because everyone around us believes it.  Saggy pants, Torn up jeans, Religious people have dressed in white robes and stood on a hill waiting for the rapture.  Money – it’s just paper and ink.

Object Lesson: 1,000,000 bill compared to a genuine $100 bill.  Which one do you want?

C.Wanting:

Willing – spunk – desire - passionate yearning for what God is saying

God is not a dictator, who forces His will upon anyone.

■  Ask Seek Knock – is like gravity – always functioning.

■  Quick story: man died and was ushered into hell.  On his way down he cried out, this is not fair, I was not as bad many others.  Angels stopped and God said let him ascend to heaven, where I am. … He didn’t want heaven while on earth and did not want heaven for eternity.

Luk 11:9-13  And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. 10  For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. 11  If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? 12  Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13  If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

D.Behaving - Obeying - Acting:

“Go and” appears 1169 times in the Bible.

Jam 1:25  But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

One of the twins said, “Mimi, I’ll be glad when I’m 16.”  Why?  “Because, when I’m 16 I’ll pretty much be able to do whatever I want.”  Papa’s answer: ‘You are free to do whatever you want anytime you want as long as you want what to do what is right.”  Doing right is our Christian freedom, not a burden, not a have-to obligation.  To those who are mature enough to be childlike, the world is our playground.

III.GOD WILL SPEAK TO YOU!

NIV  “He who belongs to God hears what God says.  The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God” (Jn. 8:47)  OUCH!

MSG “Anyone on God's side listens to God's words. This is why you're not listening--because you're not on God's side."

Move forward in this study with absolute assurance that you will hear God speaking to you.  Base your confidence in these two verses!

1.  “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (Jn. 10:27).  BAM!

2.  Beyond a shadow of any doubt, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word (rhema, living word) that proceeds out of the mouth of God” (Mt. 4:4).  YIPPEE!  God said it, therefore we believe it; we expect it and live by it – “it” being the living word of God to our hearts.  Amen!  Really – there’s no other way to experience authentic, Christian living.

Deut. 8:3 “ …to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.”

Jer. 15:16 When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart's delight, for I bear your name, O Lord God Almighty.

Young Samuel is a great example: “Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground” (1Sam. 3:19).  Oh Yeah!  Let’s walk this out!

■  THE ANGEL AND THE ASS

1Cor. 2:9-12 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 10  But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. 11  For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 12  Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

B.Look

X. HOW’S YOUR HEARING?

OPEN MY EARS OH LORD, I WANT TO HEAR YOU.

Jn. 12:27-30 "Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name!"  Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again." 29 The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him. 30 Jesus said, "This voice was for your benefit, not mine.

Get the message, Be the message, Spread the message.

Deu 4:30  When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the LORD thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice; 31  (For the LORD thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.

WANT IS WHAT WE DO.

We wake up and... want breakfast.  We try to dress ourselves and want... more clothes.   We head out the door and realize we don’t want... to go to work or school.  Want, want, and don’t want this or that, what we have and don’t have.  Gimme - gimme - gimme!

WHAT DO YOU REALLY WANT?
