SCRIPTURE ILLUSTRATION

Of all the illustration upon earth, what could possibly be more important, have more impact and be more satisfying that illustrations of the Living Word?  Think about it, which words of Jesus were not illustrations?  Didn’t He continually tell stories, painting pictures in the minds of His listeners and contemporary readers of Scripture?  Here are a few examples: a man had five servants and gave each of them talents; another had a daughter who was sick; a centurion feared God and had a ailing servant; five unprepared virgins in the company of five well prepared virgins are left out of the party; a rich man in hell is racked with pain while a poor man in heaven is happy; an impoverished widow is lauded for giving a very small sum of money; a short man climbs a tree to hear Jesus speak.  The list continues and cranial images flourish from pages without pictures.

The words create pictures in our minds.  How much more do pictures embody innumerable words and pictorially articulated truth!  The early church employed simple illustrations to communicate foundational Bible truths.  The image of the shepherd carrying a lamb upon his shoulders, and the fish symbol are only two of many examples.

The tradition continued throughout the church age.  Iconography, paintings, sculpture and stain glass windows told the Bible stories to an illiterate population, who could easily read the Good News portrayed through church decorations.  The old adage rings true, “A picture is worth a thousand word.”

On this premise, we too will illustrate the Word of God to communicate truth to our present generation.  Although some Scripture is actually 4,000 year old, the Person of Truth and the Spirit of Truth are alive and relevant today.  Our job is to pictorially tell the specific Truth that will impact lives today.
